Bear Attack in Mission BC

The Mission City Record/ Abbotsford News  reports:

A man was attacked by a bear at around 8 p.m. on Thursday evening near Mission.

Elias Hart was walking along a trail near Cedar Valley Connector and 6th Avenue. The bear swept at his back legs and knocked him to the ground.

“As I got up to turn around and run again, he kept chasing me and chasing me.”

Hart managed to get up and run towards a fence with the bear chasing him. When he made it to a busy road the bear did not follow.

Hart said he thought he “was done.”

“It’s craziness. You don’t hear about that stuff in the city. You hear about bear attacks out in the forest, but not in the city.”

Cody Ambrose, a conservation officer, said they had not yet been able to locate the bear. He said it is a rare occurrence to be swiped at by a single bear, and said it is best to avoid such trails at night.

Hart was attended to by paramedics and had no serious injuries.

It is important to remember that as we encroach on what was previously home to wildlife, we keep safety precautions in mind. Prevention can save you and the animal by avoiding conflict in the first place. Though it not always possible, everyone can co-operate by being responsible with their garbage. Remember: a fed bear is a dead bear. When walking on trails, make  as much noise as possible by wearing bells, singing and hitting a stick against the underbrush/ trees.

  1. Yep, you cant just walk in to a trail. If a bear is right there you are going to startle him/her and this is what they do. You just dont do it. I always walk with my bear bells and a remington whistle – every night!
After 5 nights of run ins with bears in a row I educated myself as much as possible.
They dont want to harm us – but they will show us that if you walk right in to their personal space – they will show you who’s boss.

    • Thank you Dana! Yes, you have certainly had your share of run-ins. Very good advice, considering your encountered them on main roads. You are doing everything right and hopefully saving some of their lives as well. I really appreciate your comments.
